A Pennsylvania father allegedly gunned down two children, a pregnant woman and five other family members before turning the gun on himself, Erie police say.

Story Snapshot

  • Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah says a man shot and killed eight family members, then himself, at a home on Perry Street on October 9, 2026.
  • Two young children and a woman eight months pregnant were among the dead.
  • Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and used flash-bangs and chemical munitions before finding the suspect dead inside.
  • Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active and the motive is still unclear.

Shots Fired at a Family Home on Perry Street

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said officers responded to a shots-fired report around 4:52 p.m. on October 9, 2026, at 722 Perry Street. A witness reported seeing a man shooting two women outside the home. Officers launched a tactical response and later found the suspected shooter dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers were first alerted by a ShotSpotter system that detected gunfire and signaled people had been shot before police even arrived on scene. That triggered a full SWAT response. During the standoff, loud sounds many believed were more gunfire actually came from flash-bang devices and chemical munitions officers used to clear the house safely.

Nine Dead, Including Two Children and a Pregnant Woman

Chief Lorah told reporters the attack killed eight people, plus the shooter, bringing the total to nine deaths. Victims were found both outside the home and inside, where police believe the gunman killed additional family members before stepping outside to shoot two women.

Two young children and a woman eight months pregnant were among those killed in the attack. Their deaths have devastated the Erie community, where neighbors described the family as quiet and the violence as shocking for the normally calm residential street.

One local outlet reported ten dead, counting the nine victims and shooter separately from the unborn child the pregnant woman was carrying. Officials have not clarified whether the coroner’s office formally includes the unborn child in the official death toll, leaving a small but notable discrepancy in public reporting.

Police Say No Ongoing Threat, But Investigation Continues

Chief Lorah addressed public safety concerns directly at a news conference. “At this time, we can confirm that the suspect is deceased,” he said. “Based on the information currently available to us, there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

Lorah said mental health might have played a role in the attack but cautioned it was too early to discuss a motive. Investigators continue working to piece together why the gunman turned on his own family, a process that will likely take weeks to fully resolve.

A Rare but Devastating Pattern

Tragedies like Erie’s fit a documented but uncommon pattern researchers call familicide, where a family member kills relatives before dying by suicide. Studies find offenders are almost always men, and roughly half of these cases end with the killer’s own death.

Forensic reviews estimate the overall incidence of murder-suicide at well under 0.001% of all deaths nationwide, underscoring just how rare and extreme this event truly is. For a city the size of Erie, a single night claiming nine lives from one family is almost unheard of, and it has left the community searching for answers while mourning an unimaginable loss.
