A sitting U.S. congressman just got crushed in his own party’s primary — and the Democrat who beat him is further left than the one he replaced.
Story Snapshot
- Brad Lander defeated two-term incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the June 23, 2026 Democratic primary for New York’s 10th Congressional District, becoming the fifth sitting House member ousted in a 2026 primary.
- Lander ran on blocking U.S. military aid to Israel, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and rejecting money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
- Lander was backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders, showing the growing muscle of the Democratic Party’s far-left wing.
- A May 2026 poll showed Lander leading Goldman 57% to 23% among likely Democratic primary voters — a gap that held on election night.
Goldman Falls to a Bigger Progressive Wave
Brad Lander won the Democratic primary for New York’s 10th Congressional District on June 23, 2026, ousting incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. Goldman is a former federal prosecutor who served as lead counsel during President Trump’s first impeachment. He had served two terms in Congress. The race was called quickly on election night, with Lander pulling in roughly 66% of the vote according to early results. Goldman conceded the race shortly after.
The result made Lander the fifth sitting House member knocked out in a 2026 primary. The district covers lower Manhattan and parts of northwest Brooklyn — one of the most left-leaning congressional districts in the country. Goldman had backing from AIPAC and J Street, two major pro-Israel political groups. Lander rejected AIPAC money entirely and made that rejection a centerpiece of his campaign.
Sanders and Mamdani Fuel the Progressive Machine
Lander’s win did not happen in a vacuum. Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed him and held events on his behalf. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist elected in 2025, also backed Lander strongly. Mamdani’s rise energized the city’s far-left voters, and his endorsement carried real weight in the district. A pre-election poll from Emerson College showed Lander leading Goldman 57% to 23% among likely Democratic primary voters, with voters under 40 backing Lander by a 73% to 15% margin.
This outcome fits a clear pattern. In 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez knocked out four-term incumbent Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th Congressional District. In 2024, progressive organizer Analilia Mejia — backed by Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez — ousted former Rep. Tom Malinowski in New Jersey. Sanders himself declared in June 2026 that “progressives are on the march” and that candidates “willing to stand up for working people are taking on the establishment and winning.” Each cycle, this playbook gets sharper and more effective.
What Lander Stands For — and Why It Matters Beyond New York
Lander ran on a platform that puts him well to the left of most House Democrats. He pledged to vote for the Block the Bombs Act and the Ceasefire Compliance Act, both of which would restrict U.S. military aid to Israel. He called Israel’s actions in Gaza “genocide.” He supported a boycott of Israeli produce at a Brooklyn food co-op. He also called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a position he has held since 2018. During debates, Goldman accused Lander of hypocrisy, pointing out that Lander had previously invested city funds in Elbit Systems, an Israeli arms company, while serving as New York City Comptroller.

Whether you see this race as a healthy democratic process or a warning sign depends on where you sit. Conservatives will note that a major American city just sent a candidate to Congress who wants to abolish ICE and label a U.S. ally’s military actions as genocide. Many on the left will see Goldman as too cozy with establishment money and foreign policy hawks. But here is what both sides can agree on: the Democratic Party is being pulled hard in one direction by a small but organized activist base, and the voters showing up to these primaries are not the average American. Turnout in party primaries remains low, which means motivated factions — not the broad public — often decide who ends up in Congress. That is a problem that cuts across party lines, and it is one more reason so many Americans feel like Washington does not represent them.
