When socialist activists are booing the top House Democrat and chanting “You’re next,” it signals a party so fractured that many Americans on both sides wonder if anyone in Washington is really fighting for them.
Story Snapshot
- Democratic Socialists of America activists at a New York victory party booed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and chanted “You’re next” when his image appeared on screen.[4]
- The chant came after socialist-backed candidates unseated Democratic incumbents, showing growing anger against party leaders seen as too cozy with corporate and pro-war interests.[2][4]
- Activists accuse Jeffries of serving donors, not voters, while Jeffries frames the conflict as political “work to do,” avoiding direct debate over money and foreign policy.[5][14]
- The clash highlights a deeper problem: a system where both moderates and radicals say they fight for the people, yet millions feel the political class mostly fights for itself.[21][26]
Socialists Turn Their Fire on a Top Democrat
At a victory party in New York for socialist candidate Claire Valdez, the crowd erupted when House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on a screen.[4] People booed loudly and began chanting “You’re next!” as they celebrated the defeat of several establishment Democrats backed by party leadership.[2][4] Commentators at Twitchy and Townhall described the scene as “bullying” and a “creepy chant,” casting the activists as extreme rather than focusing on their complaints.[2][4] For many viewers, the message was simple: socialists want Jeffries out next.
Social media posts and local clips show the chant happening in a room packed with energized Democratic Socialists of America members and allies.[3][13] They tied their anger to Jeffries’ support for mainstream Democrats and to his alignment with groups they view as part of the war and corporate machine. Some activists have called Valdez’s win “basically her seat in Congress,” pointing to how low-turnout primaries let small, highly motivated groups topple long-time incumbents while party bosses look the other way.[2][26] That dynamic worries moderates and thrills frustrated voters who feel ignored.
What DSA Activists Say Is Broken
Democratic Socialists of America is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and it openly works to weaken big corporate and financial power in politics.[21][27] Its leaders and members say Democrats like Jeffries talk about justice but stay tied to donors and to foreign policy positions they see as harmful, especially on Israel and Gaza.[21][22] Some DSA activists even claim Jeffries is “bought and paid for” by pro-Israel lobbyists and defense contractors, charging that he serves their interests instead of regular people.[5] These claims are strong, but so far activists have not produced clear financial proof that would convince skeptics or courts.[5]
DSA’s own record on Israel and Gaza makes the conflict even hotter.[21][22] The Anti-Defamation League reports that DSA chapters promote hard-line anti-Zionist positions and back boycotts against Israel, and some have used language seen as supportive of armed “resistance” by groups the United States lists as terrorist organizations.[21] One DSA founding member publicly quit, calling the group’s response to Hamas’ October 7 attack “politically and morally bankrupt.”[22] That history helps explain why many Jews and moderates see the “You’re next” chant and “Free Palestine” slogans not only as internal party drama, but as part of a wider wave of anger that sometimes crosses into hate.
How Jeffries Responds and Why Many Still Feel Shut Out
Hakeem Jeffries has tried to present himself as both tough on the Trump movement and sensitive to civil rights issues. He has condemned the rise of “Make America Great Again” politics and promised to “break MAGA” by exposing corruption and defending democracy.[3] He has also criticized federal immigration enforcement as “out of control” and called for reforms like body cameras and tighter rules on arrests.[11] In 2025 he even warned against arresting New Jersey lawmakers who joined immigration protests, arguing they should not face retaliation for political actions.[12] Those moves let him claim he is no friend of the Trump White House or of heavy-handed policing.
On Israel and antisemitism, Jeffries has taken positions that anger some DSA members but reassure many centrists and conservatives. He issued a formal statement condemning antisemitic protests in New York City at the Nova Music Festival memorial, stressing the need to stand against hate and violence.[16] After socialist candidates unseated incumbents, he said DSA-aligned Mayor Zohran Mamdani has “work to do” to repair ties with congressional Democrats, framing the dispute as a matter of internal politics rather than deep moral failure.[14] What he has not done is directly answer the activists’ charges about donor influence or vote-by-vote moderation on Gaza and labor rights, leaving a gap that fuels suspicion.[5][18]
A Warning Sign for a Failing Political System
For many Americans, this fight inside the Democratic Party looks familiar and discouraging. Since at least 2016, progressive groups have slammed party leaders for being too close to Wall Street, defense contractors, and foreign lobbies, while leaders defend themselves as the “responsible” adults protecting the system.[20][25] At the same time, conservatives see Democrats tearing themselves apart and argue that both sides of the political class ignore working families, small business owners, and people crushed by inflation and high energy costs. The common thread is growing mistrust of elites in both parties who seem more focused on power games than on solutions.[21][26]
The democrat party is just about dead the DSA is the last breath and once the the fake left get in and sellout that will be it. Zohran fans was literally chanting to Hakeem Jeffries to be primary not even knowing that Zohran been working in the shadows to protect him https://t.co/4opaS2sx79 pic.twitter.com/oghiLRUGvU

Low-turnout primaries and factional warfare may let small groups send a few shock waves through Congress, but they do not fix the deeper problem.[26] When DSA activists chant “You’re next” at Hakeem Jeffries, they are shouting at one man. Many Americans hear something broader behind it: a cry that the people at the top, left and right, have lost touch with the country they claim to serve. Until leaders open their books, debate policy honestly, and break their own ties to money and insider power, scenes like this are likely to keep spreading, and trust in the system will keep eroding.
