Lawmakers Warn Against Softened Vetting Process For Chinese Migrants

Amid an increased number of Chinese unlawful migrants pouring across the southern border, given the Biden administration’s efforts to soften the vetting process for those coming from China. Lawmakers are sounding the alarm that such a move could threaten the U.S. national security.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at the behest of President Joe Biden, recently cut the number of questions asked to illegal immigrants from China from 40 to just five. Such a decision comes as a record number of Chinese unlawful migrants crossed the southern border in 2023.

Officials told the New York Post that although the move was essential to expedite CBP’s screening process, it increased the possibility of granting asylum to individuals connected with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“The change in procedure appears to reflect the reality that the volume of Chinese migrants is overwhelming the US immigration control system … [and] should speed up the processing of applicants,” a senior international defense researcher at RAND Corporation, Timothy Heath, told the New York Post.

“However, any simplification risks raising the risk that unwanted individuals slip through the cracks,” Heath added.

In a statement to the New York Post, the House Select Subcommittee on the CCP said slashing the number of questions for Chinese illegal immigrants processed at the U.S.-Mexico border is “unacceptable” and posed a grave risk to U.S. national security.

“Americans do not want America’s foremost adversary facilitating the flow of fentanyl into our country or sending thousands of people across our border illegally,” the House subcommittee said in a statement. “President Biden needs to secure the border now.”

In the first quarter of 2023, CBP recorded that the number of Chinese unlawful migrants at the southern border skyrocketed in comparison to the year prior, with nearly 35,000 more crossing the border. Despite this, the Biden administration chose to water down the vetting process for individuals wishing to come to America from China.

The illegal immigration crisis at the southern border has jeopardized the lives of all Americans and has put major cities across the country in a predicament, such as New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Detroit, all run by Democrats.
