Another Day, Another “Constitutional Crisis”
Here we go again, folks. The Democrats have found their latest excuse to hyperventilate about a “constitutional crisis” while conveniently ignoring the actual crisis of our wide-open southern border. Congressional Democrats are now uniting against the Trump administration’s handling of one deportation case – that of Kilmar Abrego Garcia – who was deported to El Salvador. Yes, a single deportation case has them clutching their pearls and crying that the republic is falling. The Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department have acknowledged the deportation was an error, but rather than allowing the administrative process to work, Democrats are seizing the moment for political theater.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are leading the charge, demanding immediate compliance with court directives. Schumer has gone so far as to place a hold on nominees for two key US attorney positions – because nothing says “we care about law enforcement” quite like blocking appointments to enforce the law. Meanwhile, millions of illegal aliens continue to stream across our border with zero consequences, but I guess that’s not the kind of constitutional issue that concerns Democrat leadership.
Selective Outrage on Due Process
Representative Jim McGovern suddenly became a champion of due process rights, warning against wrongful deportations. “Ask yourself—what’s going to stop the government from deporting you to a prison in El Salvador? The people get it. Either everyone has due process—or nobody does,” wrote McGovern. That’s rich coming from the party that had no problem with the FBI raiding Mar-a-Lago or the politically-motivated prosecutions of President Trump in New York. The selective outrage is stunning. When it comes to American citizens having their rights trampled by overzealous prosecutors with political vendettas, Democrats are nowhere to be found.
“Ask yourself—what’s going to stop the government from deporting you to a prison in El Salvador? The people get it. Either everyone has due process—or nobody does,” wrote Jim McGovern, the senior Democrat on the powerful Rules committee. – Jim McGovern.
Even Senator John Fetterman, who occasionally breaks ranks with his party’s extreme positions, has jumped on the bandwagon, calling on the White House to follow the Supreme Court’s directive. Meanwhile, Senator Chris Van Hollen is planning a trip to El Salvador to speak with Garcia, with other Democrats seeking to join this taxpayer-funded field trip. Nothing like a congressional junket disguised as a fact-finding mission to show how serious they are about this single deportation case.
Where Are Biden and Harris?
Perhaps the most telling aspect of this whole charade is the conspicuous absence of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. For all the Democrat noise about constitutional crises and the rule of law being under threat, the two highest-ranking Democrats in the country are oddly silent. Biden’s recent speeches have lacked strong criticism of Trump, and Harris seems content to let congressional Democrats do the heavy lifting. It’s almost as if they know this manufactured outrage doesn’t resonate with average Americans who are more concerned about the economy, crime, and yes, the actual border crisis.
“The Trump administration has acknowledged [that Garcia’s deportation was committed in error] and so they need to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive or the Supreme Court needs to enforce its order aggressively, which should include contempt,” said the House Democratic leader.
Even some centrist Democrats are questioning their party’s hyperfocus on this issue. These rare voices of reason believe the focus should be on policy matters that actually affect Americans’ daily lives – like tariff policy and the economy. But those concerns are being drowned out by the louder voices looking to score political points. The irony is palpable – Democrats are uniting around a single deportation while Americans suffer under record inflation, rising crime rates, and a southern border that might as well not exist. Talk about misplaced priorities.
