Trump Administration Reshuffles ICE Leadership As Deportation Targets Fall Short

The Trump administration has removed ICE Acting Director Caleb Vitello as part of a push to ramp up deportation numbers. Officials had set a goal of between 1,200 and 1,500 arrests per day, but recent figures show ICE has yet to reach those levels.

Vitello will remain with the agency but will now oversee enforcement operations. The administration has also reassigned two other senior ICE officials, Russell Hott and Peter Berg, returning them to field offices in an effort to reshape the agency’s leadership.

Madison Sheahan has been named deputy director and will take on leadership responsibilities until a permanent director is selected. Sheahan, who worked closely with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in the past, has a background in enforcement policy.

The Trump administration has prioritized immigration enforcement, deploying ICE teams to conduct large-scale operations in major cities. The agency has removed more than 37,600 illegal immigrants in Trump’s first month back in office, though that number remains below previous monthly averages.

The push for stricter enforcement has put additional pressure on ICE detention facilities, which have reported limited space as deportations continue.

With a permanent ICE director still to be named, the administration is expected to announce further changes in the coming weeks.
