Tensions Rise Over EPIC City Plans

Governor Greg Abbott’s strong opposition to the East Plano Islamic Center’s (EPIC) plan for a 402-acre Muslim-themed community in Collin and Hunt counties is causing political waves. Abbott is wary of any association with Sharia law, underscoring that it is inadmissible in Texas. This opposition has fueled a broader debate over religious freedom versus the state’s legal framework.

CAIR claims Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton are broadcasting “hateful misinformation” about EPIC City. The project involves constructing a mosque, a faith-based institution, and more than 1,000 residential homes. Despite the pushback, EPIC leadership emphasizes the project aims to integrate well into Texan society.

Abbott’s Concerns and Legal Actions

Governor Abbott instructed state agencies to scrutinize EPIC’s activities, even suggesting potential legislation to curb the project. A cease-and-desist letter was issued over alleged violations, such as improperly operating a funeral home service. Meanwhile, Paxton has also issued a Civil Investigation Demand to thoroughly investigate.

“Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton were spreading “hateful misinformation” regarding proposals for a new Islamic-themed settlement in the state, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim advocacy group in the United States, told Newsweek.” – Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Amidst claims of Islamophobia, Community Capital Partners, overseeing the project, expressed commitment to adhere to the Fair Housing Act. The organization reassured that no blanket bans will be implemented on any group. Despite ongoing investigations, EPIC City remains in its early stages, with no formal planning application yet.

Project Leaders Emphasize Integration

Yasir Qadhi, a leader within EPIC, insists the community will exemplify integration and contribution, distancing the project from any notions of cultural isolationism or legal divergence. “EPIC City is going to be a role model community of thousands of Muslims living well-integrated. We are not forming a cult. We’re not forming big barriers between the rest of society,” Qadhi expressed.

We’re going to be giving back to this state and this country, and we’re going to be showing what it means to be a Muslim neighborhood.” – Yasir Qadhi.

The project aims to showcase the cultural richness Islam offers, within the framework of U.S. and Texas laws. EPIC already accommodates a considerable Muslim community in Plano, with plans to enhance integration and social cohesion through this expansive project.
