Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott presided over the public debut of newly constructed portions of the Texas border wall funded by the state. He described the work as “historically unprecedented” and the first of its kind for any state. Abbott said the wall is being built for the entire United States and Texas security.
Abbott said the construction by the Texas state government is necessary because Joe Biden’s administration has failed to do its duty under the Constitution and federal law to execute and enforce the country’s immigration laws properly.
So far, in 2021, over 1.2 million illegal migrants have been apprehended by law enforcement at the Mexican border. Captured illegals are from all parts of the globe and Mexico, including multiple nations hostile to the United States like China, Iran, Syria, and Russia.
In his appearance at the border in the Rio Grande Valley, Abbott said that in addition to migrants, record numbers of victims of human trafficking, illegal guns, and narcotics are being brought into the country. He noted that border agents had intercepted enough fentanyl alone to kill every person in Texas, California, Florida, Illinois, and New York combined.
Recent reporting indicates that the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45 is fentanyl overdose, killing more than suicide, disease, auto accidents, or murder. Abbott said that Joe Biden facilitates those deaths through his open border policies, and “it must be stopped.”
Abbott emphasized that illegal immigrants captured in Texas will not be turned over to federal law enforcement “for release” but charged under state law for criminal trespassing. He said that the state’s wall will be fitted out with electronic detection and surveillance devices as well as razor wire, barrier deterrents, and manned by more than 10,000 members of the Texas National Guard and the state’s Department of Public Safety.
