Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is making it clear that her government will not tolerate US interference in Mexico’s struggle with cartel violence, even as the Trump administration ramps up efforts to curb the deadly influence of drug trafficking organizations. Sheinbaum rejected any possibility of US military involvement, despite cartels continuing to terrorize Mexican citizens.

Trump has taken a hard stance against cartel activity, officially designating several major groups as terrorist organizations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that this classification would give law enforcement expanded authority to dismantle cartel networks. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who has taken an active advisory role in the administration, suggested that this designation could lead to military action, stating that the move “makes them eligible for drone strikes.”

Sheinbaum, who took office under suspicious circumstances following an election marred by cartel-linked assassinations, has faced mounting criticism over her refusal to confront the cartels head-on. In response to the US designation, she pledged to introduce constitutional reforms to block any foreign intervention, arguing that Mexico will not be “subordinate” to outside forces.

Despite her vocal resistance, Mexico has attempted to ease tensions by arresting key cartel figures and increasing military presence at the US border. These actions appear to be an attempt to avoid the economic penalties threatened by Trump rather than a genuine effort to weaken cartel power.

US surveillance inside Mexico has also expanded, with drone operations now focusing on fentanyl labs and other cartel-controlled sites. Sheinbaum admitted that these flights have been ongoing but expressed frustration at their increased presence.

Maybe Claudia Sheinbaum should think twice before making threats—Mexico’s cartels have been invading our sovereignty for decades.

While Sheinbaum continues to reject foreign intervention, cartel-related killings in Mexico show no signs of slowing down, raising further doubts about her true loyalties.
