Republican Senators Claim State Department ‘Interfering’ With Hunter Biden Investigation

Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have reportedly written a letter alleging that Joe Biden’s State Department has interfered in a federal investigation of Hunter Biden’s foreign business deals. The Washington Free Beacon reported that the two senators stated the State Department “improperly” classified documents describing his activities in Ukraine.

In particular, the senators pointed to a document describing Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma Holdings. The Ukrainian owner of Burisma has been investigated for alleged bribery.

In the letter directed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Grassley and Johnson said that they have documents that confirm the State Department has withheld other records and has “inappropriately” classified documents while the Senate was investigating Hunter Biden’s conflicts of interest.

The senators allege that Hunter Biden worked in concert with his father to use the family’s influence to profit personally. They describe an email sent by George Kent with the State Department that references a bribe paid to officials in Ukraine to terminate investigations into the activities of Burisma’s owner.

Hunter Biden’s shadowy overseas activities hurt Joe Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign. Joe Biden has consistently denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of his son’s business deals. However, Grassley and Johnson say that the email they are demanding shows that the State Department had actual knowledge of conduct by Hunter Biden that was detrimental to America’s national security.

The email dated November 22, 2016, has been obtained by Just The News and details Kent’s conversations with state officials in Ukraine and Democratic lobbyist Sally Painter with Blue Star Strategies.

Kent describes a bribe totaling $7 million paid to Ukraine’s top criminal prosecutor to close down investigations into Mykola Zlochevsky, the owner of Burisma. He also brings up Hunter Biden’s contract with Burisma, stating that his position on the company’s board harms Joe Biden’s “anti-corruption message.” Kent advised that it would be best to “quietly” warn Joe Biden about the conflict of interest and other issues his son’s activities presented. Joe Biden was at that time the sitting Vice President and was Barack Obama’s primary liaison to the Ukrainian government.

Grassley and Johnson demanded an unredacted and declassified version of Kent’s email and called for an end to efforts to conceal Hunter Biden’s dealings with Burisma.

Hunter Biden appears to still be under investigation regarding his federal taxes and his foreign associations. No response from the State Department to Grassley and Johnson has yet been reported.
