Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, admitted to drug abuse in both England and California in a ghost-written memoir, and he is now reportedly “at risk” of losing his U.S. visa as a result.
An immigration expert told The Telegraph that Harry, now most known for being the obedient husband behind American actress Meghan Markle, could have his visa revoked if he lied about drug use when applying for it.
“He would have been asked [about drug abuse when applying for his visa],” said Professor Alberto Benítez, head of the Immigration Clinic at George Washington University.
Benitez continued:
“If he was truthful in his answers, he should have been denied … [o]ne of the repercussions, whatever visa he has, is that it would be revoked, or he’ll be subject to being revoked because he lied in the application process.”
In his memoir, Prince Harry admitted to using cocaine and cannabis at the elite British boarding school Eton College, also saying he hallucinated on mushrooms at a California bash at actress Courteney Cox’s L.A. mansion.
In a bizarre excerpt from the book, titled, “Spare,” the Duke of Sussex not-so-elegantly described his experience on the psychedelic mushrooms:
“Beside the toilet was a round silver bin, the kind with a foot pedal to open the lid. I stared at the bin. It stared back. Then it became . . . a head. I stepped on the pedal and the head opened its mouth. A huge open grin. I laughed, turned away, took a piss,” Harry said.
Chrissie Fernandez, another immigration lawyer, told The Telegraph that it is “unlikely that his case would be reopened if immigration authorities were to hear that he previously, years ago, used drugs,” despite having been required to disclose drug abuses in his visa application.
An at-risk visa is just the latest in a whirlwind of bad press for the royal. Prince Harry has faced increasing scrutiny in recent days after the release of his memoir.
Monday morning, English journalist Tina Brown accused the Duke of “gaslighting,” also saying he is “selling out his family for money.”
Brown discussed her thoughts on Harry with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
