Pelosi Criticized By Ex-Biden Adviser For Undermining Campaign

Anita Dunn, a former top communications adviser to President Joe Biden, has openly criticized House Speaker emerita Nancy Pelosi for her role in derailing Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign. Dunn, now working with a super PAC supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, claimed that Pelosi’s public doubts about Biden’s candidacy significantly weakened his position within the Democratic Party, ultimately leading to his decision to step aside.

Dunn pointed to Pelosi’s public appearances following Biden’s lackluster debate performance on June 27 as a turning point. According to Dunn, Pelosi’s remarks encouraged other Democratic leaders and donors to question Biden’s viability, creating a wave of doubt that the campaign could not overcome. Dunn argued that these actions ignored the support Biden had among primary voters, leading to an outcome driven by donor influence rather than voter preference.

The pressure on Biden was further intensified by a New York Times op-ed from actor and Democratic donor George Clooney, which urged Biden to end his campaign. Despite initial resistance, Biden ultimately decided to withdraw from the race on July 21, stating that it was in the best interest of the party. Dunn described this decision as unprecedented, noting that it went against the sentiments of many undecided voters who believed Biden could still compete.

Dunn also criticized Pelosi’s leadership during the 2022 midterm elections, suggesting that the loss of the House to Republicans might have been avoided with stronger guidance. While Pelosi has expressed admiration for Biden since his withdrawal, the two have not communicated since he ended his campaign, reflecting the ongoing rift between them.
