Michigan Union Workers Reject MSNBC’s Focus On Anti-Trump Rhetoric

During a recent MSNBC focus group with Michigan union workers, it became clear that the network’s attempt to steer the conversation toward criticizing President Donald Trump did not resonate with the participants. Instead, the workers voiced their concerns about the economy and immigration—issues where Trump has consistently garnered support.

Host Alex Wagner introduced topics like January 6, seemingly hoping to shift the discussion against Trump. However, none of the workers appeared interested in discussing it, with one participant bluntly stating, “There are thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the border every day, and the Vice President has done little to address it.”

The focus group underscored a larger issue for Kamala Harris as she campaigns for the presidency—working-class voters in key states like Michigan are not swayed by the media’s focus on Trump’s legal troubles. Instead, they are focused on economic concerns, job security, and border control, areas where they feel Trump has a stronger track record.

Wagner’s attempts to discuss January 6 and other media-driven narratives fell flat, as the workers repeatedly brought the conversation back to the policies that directly impact their day-to-day lives. They expressed frustration with the current administration’s handling of key issues, particularly immigration.

With Michigan being a crucial battleground state, this focus group suggests that Harris may face significant challenges in winning over union workers. Many participants expressed disappointment in the lack of progress on issues they care about, leaving the door open for Trump to solidify his support among this demographic.
