Just as former President Donald Trump was heading to Fulton County, Georgia, to be arraigned, President Joe Biden sent out a tweet encouraging people to donate to his campaign — prompting outrage at his apparent attempt to cash in on the arrest of his political opponent.
“Apropos of nothing, I think today’s a great day to give to my campaign,” Biden wrote in a post on his personal account on X, formerly known as Twitter, sharing a link to his campaign for people to donate.

Critics slammed Biden for soliciting donations while Trump was being arrested, noting that his tweet made it clear that the indictments against Biden’s chief political rival were part of a coordinated effort to interfere in the 2024 presidential election.
“Why? To commend you for arresting the leader of the opposition party?” responded author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza.

Journalist Logan Hall noted in a tweet that “this is a flex. raw display of power laughing at you because they are completely above the law. it’s a joke to them. and you will obey or face life-ruining consequences.”

“Joe Biden celebrating the political persecution of the biggest threat to his second term. This is the harsh, tyrannical reality of the state of the U.S. republic today,” wrote Daniel Baldwin, National Political Correspondent for OANN.

Trump also tweeted for the first time since 2021 following his arraignment, asking for donations for his own presidential campaign and sharing an image of his mugshot with the words “ELECTION INTERFERENCE” and “NEVER SURRENDER!”
The link redirects to a page with a personal note from Trump to his supporters, which reads: “Today, at the notoriously violent jail in Fulton County, Georgia, I was ARRESTED despite having committed NO CRIME. The American people know what’s going on. What has taken place is a travesty of justice and ELECTION INTERFERENCE.”
“The Left wants to intimidate YOU out of voting for a political outsider who puts the American people FIRST,” the note continues. “But today, I walked into the lion’s den with one simple message on behalf of our entire movement: I WILL NEVER SURRENDER OUR MISSION TO SAVE AMERICA.”
“If you are doing poorly due to the sinister people in control of our country right now, don’t even think about donating! But if you can, please make a contribution to evict Crooked Joe Biden from the White House and SAVE AMERICA during this dark chapter in our nation’s history. Thank you and God bless you,” the note concludes.

Many political pundits predicted that both sides of the aisle would use the Trump indictments to fundraise for different reasons — with the Democrats fundraising off of celebrating the arrest and the Republicans fundraising off of calling out the corruption of the “deep state” actors targeting the former president.
