Green Cards For Afghans Pledged By VP Harris Despite Recent Terrorist Arrest

Vice President Kamala Harris is pushing for green cards to be granted to tens of thousands of Afghan nationals resettled in the US, despite growing concerns about their vetting. Her announcement comes in the wake of the arrest of Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan resettled in Oklahoma, who is accused of plotting an ISIS-linked terrorist attack on Election Day.

Harris has endorsed a Senate bill that would create a pathway to citizenship for Afghans brought to the US during the Biden-Harris administration’s 2021 withdrawal. However, critics argue that the administration’s rushed vetting process has allowed potential security threats into the country.

Several federal audits have revealed that many Afghans were not thoroughly screened. In 2023, it was reported that some individuals with ties to terrorism, including those involved in placing IEDs targeting US troops, were resettled. These revelations have prompted Republican lawmakers, like Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), to demand accountability from the Biden-Harris administration.

Despite these challenges, Harris is moving forward with her immigration reform plan, though concerns about national security remain at the forefront of the debate.
