A subway attack in Brooklyn has led Gideon Moncrieffe, a former TikTok executive, to file a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The lawsuit accuses the agency of systemic negligence in failing to protect passengers, including Moncrieffe, who was slashed in the face during his commute.
The incident took place on May 10, 2023, when Moncrieffe intervened in an argument between Sean Lewis, a man with a violent history, and an older rider. Moncrieffe tried to de-escalate the situation, warning Lewis of the consequences of aggression on the subway. Despite an initial calm response, Lewis attacked him with a sharp object, inflicting an eight-inch wound that required over 100 stitches.
Moncrieffe’s lawsuit claims the MTA failed to enforce safety measures and address foreseeable risks. He alleges that the train conductor locked the doors during the incident, trapping him with the attacker. The filing describes the attack as a direct result of the MTA’s failure to uphold its own safety protocols.
Lewis had a lengthy criminal record, including nine prior arrests for violent behavior. While the MTA disputes claims that Lewis was banned from the subway system, critics argue the agency’s lack of enforcement allowed dangerous individuals to threaten public safety.
In addition to seeking damages, Moncrieffe’s lawsuit calls for increased security personnel and improved emergency responses. He argues the MTA needs consistent enforcement of its prohibited rider policies to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Moncrieffe, who now suffers from PTSD, depression and flashbacks, says the trauma has significantly impacted his personal and professional life. His engagement fell apart following the attack, which he says shattered his dreams of building a life with his fiancée.
