DHS Subpoenaed As Comer Probes Walz’s Alleged China Ties

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chair of the House Oversight Committee, has subpoenaed DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for documents concerning Gov. Tim Walz’s (D-MN) potential connections to the CCP. The investigation seeks to uncover whether Walz’s frequent visits to China have influenced his political decisions as he runs for vice president alongside Kamala Harris.

The subpoena follows claims from a whistleblower about a DHS group chat with information regarding Walz’s interactions with China. Comer is also investigating Walz’s involvement with the Hormel Institute, which has collaborated with Chinese organizations, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Comer has refuted claims that the investigation is politically motivated, stating that the committee’s focus on CCP influence predates Walz’s nomination as Harris’ running mate. He stressed the importance of ensuring that any possible foreign influence on US politicians is thoroughly examined.

Walz’s extensive time in China — including organizing a student trip there in the 1990s — has raised concerns among GOP lawmakers about how his experiences might affect his foreign policy decisions if elected. Comer’s investigation aims to determine if there are any ties between Walz and the CCP that could compromise US national security.

Mayorkas has been ordered to appear before the committee on October 7 to provide unredacted materials. This ongoing investigation is expected to play a significant role in the 2024 election as Republicans continue to scrutinize Walz’s ties to China.
