DESPICABLE – Military Opens Fire!

Myanmar’s military junta fired on a Chinese humanitarian convoy bringing earthquake aid, perfectly illustrating why these power-hungry thugs can’t be trusted to care for their own citizens during a crisis.

Myanmar’s Military Shows Its True Colors

Nothing says “we care about our citizens” quite like shooting at aid workers trying to help earthquake victims. In a move that should surprise absolutely no one who’s been paying attention, Myanmar’s military junta fired warning shots at a Chinese Red Cross convoy delivering desperately needed supplies to victims of a devastating earthquake. This pathetic display of authoritarianism comes as the death toll rises to nearly 3,000 people with thousands more injured. But apparently, maintaining iron-fisted control is more important than letting people receive aid that might save their lives.

Watch coverage here.

The junta tried to justify their actions by claiming the convoy was in a conflict zone “without informing authorities” – because clearly, the proper protocol during a humanitarian emergency is to file paperwork in triplicate before saving lives. Meanwhile, these same “authorities” have implemented internet blackouts, mobile network shutdowns, and media censorship to ensure no one can coordinate effectively or tell the world what’s really happening. It’s the typical playbook of an illegitimate regime more interested in control than human life.

Empty Words and Deadly Actions

The hypocrisy of this military regime is stomach-turning. On one hand, they’re publicly declaring a 21-day ceasefire “to express sympathy for affected citizens, facilitate humanitarian aid and ensure stability.” On the other hand, they’re actively bombing the same regions devastated by the earthquake and blocking aid from reaching those in desperate need. This isn’t incompetence – it’s a deliberate strategy to starve out resistance and punish civilians who don’t support their illegitimate rule.

“You cannot ask for aid with one hand and bomb with the other. Carrying out air strikes and attacking civilians in the same region where the earthquake struck is inhumane and shows a blatant disregard for human rights” said Joe Freeman.

Let’s be crystal clear about what’s happening here. The junta has established a pattern of weaponizing humanitarian aid, directing it only to areas they control while actively preventing it from reaching regions held by resistance forces. They’ve set up roadblocks, imposed curfews, and created extensive checkpoint systems that deliberately delay aid workers during the critical 72-hour survival window after the earthquake. They’re using human suffering as a political weapon.

The International Response

Even Australia, which has pledged $6.5 million in humanitarian support, had to explicitly state they’re taking “proactive steps to ensure our assistance does not legitimize the military regime.” That’s how bad these guys are – countries have to clarify that helping earthquake victims doesn’t mean they support the thugs in charge. Human Rights Watch and other international organizations are rightfully calling for unrestricted humanitarian access, but the junta continues to play games with people’s lives.

“I’ve talked to a few people now that were part of the rescue efforts in both Sagaing and Mandalay, and they said that [the military] imposed a curfew… the roads were blocked, the checkpoints were really long, and there was a huge checking of goods and services going in and a lot of questioning” said John Quinley.

The UN reports over 28 million people have been affected by this earthquake. Let that sink in – 28 MILLION people. Yet the military junta is more concerned with maintaining power than allowing unfettered humanitarian aid. This is what happens when you let corrupt, power-hungry authoritarians seize control. They’ll happily let their own citizens suffer and die if it helps them maintain their grip on power. The shooting incident with the Chinese convoy is just the latest example of the junta’s utter contempt for human life and international norms.

Remember the Lessons Here

The next time some progressive academic starts extolling the virtues of centralized government control or suggesting that individual rights should take a backseat to collective needs, remember Myanmar. This is the end result of unchecked government power – a military regime that shoots at aid workers while civilians die under rubble. It’s a stark reminder of why our constitutional rights matter and why resistance to government overreach isn’t just principled – it’s necessary for survival.

“Myanmar’s junta cannot be trusted to respond to a disaster of this scale.” said Bryony Lau.

The situation in Myanmar represents the ultimate failure of authoritarian governance – a regime so focused on maintaining power that it will actively harm its own citizens during their most desperate hour of need. When a government fears losing control more than it fears letting its people die, it has lost any claim to legitimacy. The world needs to recognize this brutal reality and ensure aid reaches those in need, with or without the junta’s permission.
