Democrats Introduce Resolution To Ban Trump From US Capitol

The latest anti-Trump move by House Democrats is aimed at permanently barring the former president from entering the U.S. Capitol. Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) are pushing a bill to prohibit former President Donald Trump from entering the U.S. Capitol. But he is not their only target, as some of his former aides are listed too.

Trump’s allies listed in the resolution include former political strategist Steve Bannon, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, former Assistant to the President Peter Navarro, and former high-ranking DOJ official Jeffrey Clark.

The former president’s lawyers, John Eastman, Kenneth Cheseboro, and Rudy Giuliani, were also named.

The bill was written by Williams, with Swalwell standing as an original co-sponsor. “And by the way, when the village nearly burns down, we don’t invite the arsonist back to visit. Duh,” Swalwell tweeted in defense of the resolution.

Echoing Swalwell’s statement, Williams quoted her California colleague’s tweet, saying, “@RepSwalwell co-sponsored my legislation, but I’ll sign on to his analogy: let’s keep the arsonists out of the Capitol y’all.”

Responding to the bill, Trump put out a statement on Feb. 22. Focused on Swalwell; the statement began by calling the California lawmaker’s “integrity” and “intelligence” to question as he brought up his alleged sexual relationship with a Chinese spy.

“This idiot is now calling (for publicity purposes only) for some Great American Patriots, including me, to be banned from the Capitol,” Trump continued.

The 2024 presidential aspirant went further to dismiss the legislation, calling Swalwell “a ‘low life,’ not respected by anybody, and merely used for entertainment reasons by the Fake News Media to continue their assault on President Donald J. Trump, and America.”

Williams took a similar step in the past right after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot in 2021. A few days later, on Jan. 13, introduced legislation that sought to stop Trump from entering the Capitol after the expiration of his term.

“Directing the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives, the Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper of the Senate, and the United States Capitol Police to prohibit President Donald John Trump from entering the United States Capitol at any time after the expiration of his term as President,” the concurrent resolution reads.
