Democrats Block Bill To Protect Women From Criminal Immigrants

The House of Representatives passed a Republican bill to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes, but 158 Democrats voted against it. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed with a 266-158 vote, drawing outrage from Republicans over the strong Democratic opposition.

The legislation seeks to remove illegal immigrants convicted of sexual offenses or domestic violence and prevent those admitting to such crimes from entering the U.S. Critics of the 158 Democrats who opposed the bill argue that their votes disregard the safety of American women and children.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) called the measure a partisan stunt, accusing Republicans of scapegoating immigrants. Republicans countered that blocking the bill puts political correctness over public safety.

Mace, who has distanced herself from Trump for January 6, has since shifted her stance and aligned with him. Her controversial record includes reported efforts to gain media attention during the Capitol protests by proposing to confront rioters for publicity, raising skepticism about her motivations.

Some Democrats, such as Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (D WA), supported the bill despite party pressure, citing the need to address border-related crime. Their votes reflect growing frustration over rising criminal activity tied to illegal immigration.

This legislation follows other Republican measures addressing public safety and immigration enforcement, with bipartisan support highlighting concerns across party lines.
