A former City University of New York (CUNY) employee, Teona Pagan, is suing the university, claiming she was fired after converting to Christianity and requesting a religious accommodation. Pagan worked as the Fellowships and Public Service Program Coordinator at CUNY’s Research Foundation, overseeing several fellowship programs, including one focused on LGBT advocacy.
Pagan alleges that after converting in April 2022, her duties related to the Mixner Fellowship, which promotes LGBT rights, conflicted with her religious beliefs. She requested to be reassigned to other programs but was denied, with the university claiming that it would create an “undue burden.”
The lawsuit also claims that Pagan was interrogated about her beliefs during a meeting with her supervisor and the human resources director. Shortly after, Pagan was placed on administrative leave and informed that her contract would not be renewed.
Although Pagan initially filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the commission declined to pursue further investigation. Undeterred, she has moved forward with her lawsuit, alleging religious discrimination and wrongful termination.
Pagan, who now works for a Christian apparel company, has remained steadfast in her faith, stating that the experience has brought her closer to God. She believes that her legal battle will inspire others to stand firm in their beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
