U.S. Capitol Police officers arrested nine CBS employees who work for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Thursday night for illegally trespassing inside the Capitol.
The group was apprehended inside the Longworth House Office Building. They have been charged with illegal entry into Capitol office buildings after hours. The staffers had already been escorted out of the building earlier in the day for being in a secure area without credentials.
The U.S. Capitol Police provided a press statement to Fox News that indicated officers responded to a call that came in around 8:30 p.m. of a disturbance inside the Longworth House Office Building.
Officers saw seven persons without security escorts or proper identification in a hallway that was closed to visitors. After it was determined they were the same group that had been asked to leave earlier in the day, they were arrested and charged with “Unlawful Entry.”
The statement indicated that the matter is still being investigated and additional charges are possible after the USCP consults with the U.S. Attorney.
The persons arrested included high-level staffers that have produced material for the Colbert show for years.
A CBS spokesperson said that the Colbert staff had sent their “Triumph the Insult Comic Dog” team to the Capitol on Wednesday and Thursday for interviews for a comedy segment that were “authorized and pre-arranged with Congressional aides.” According to the network, the staffers were arrested after they had stayed on-site to “film stand-ups” in the hallways.
The group of trespassers reportedly took video and photos near the offices of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO).
Jesse Watters with Fox News reported that the trespassers were personally admitted to the House building by Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Jake Auchincloss (D-MA).
There have already been public demands that Schiff be removed from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand-selected January 6 Committee for his part in facilitating the illegal trespass. Others have demanded that the trespassers be charged with the same crimes as the persons who were arrested inside the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich posted a tweet saying that if the Colbert trespassers are not charged for the same crimes as the defendants from January 6, the legitimacy of the judiciary will be further eroded in the eyes of Americans.
“The Late Show” aired a rerun on Friday evening and Colbert has not yet made a public statement about the arrests.
