Bret Baier’s Praise Of Tim Walz Sparks Backlash From Conservatives

Fox News anchor Bret Baier has found himself at the center of a political storm after expressing admiration for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), Vice President Kamala Harris’ choice for her vice-presidential running mate. During a segment on Fox News, Baier praised Walz for his rural appeal, noting his hobbies of hunting and fishing.

“I mean, this guy hunts, he ice fishes. He’s one of those guys. He talks about rural America and how Donald Trump doesn’t understand it,” Baier said during his conversation with Bill Hemmer.

Baier’s comments have been met with strong criticism from conservative viewers, who argue that Walz’s progressive policies and handling of the Black Lives Matter protests make him a controversial figure. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the Harris-Walz ticket “the most left-wing in American history” and accused Walz of failing to take decisive action during the 2020 Minneapolis riots.

Republican strategist Kellyanne Conway also voiced her concerns, suggesting that Walz’s selection might not be the best strategic move for the Democratic ticket. “Tim Walz, question mark. What a relief,” Conway said on social media, indicating that she sees Walz as a less formidable opponent.

Fox News co-anchor Gillian Turner brought attention to Walz’s recent rise in social media prominence, questioning if his media-friendly persona influenced Harris’s decision more than his policy positions. “Walz did come to some sort of social media Internet notoriety over the last week or so. Bret, he’s given the credit for coining the term ‘weird’ to describe the Republican ticket that’s obviously taken off among the Harris crowd. You think this may be a case of the campaign choosing the shiniest object in the room?” Turner asked.

Baier defended his remarks by focusing on Walz’s relatability and plainspoken communication style, but he avoided discussing Walz’s controversial policies. “He’s been on our shows. He’s not afraid to get — like JD Vance. He’s not afraid to go to different places. He’s not afraid to mix it up. He does speak in plain speak. He’s a former football coach, you know, former teacher. He has that, that appeal, that aspect,” Baier explained.

The reaction to Baier’s comments highlights the challenges faced by media figures in navigating the polarized political environment. As the 2024 election draws nearer, the Harris-Walz ticket will continue to be a focal point of intense scrutiny and debate, reflecting the deep divisions and high stakes in American politics.
