Courier Newsroom, a media network bankrolled by billionaire George Soros, is increasing its influence in Nevada by running a local news site designed to sway voters against President Donald Trump and other Republicans. The organization’s Nevada outlet, “The Nevadan,” is driving an ad campaign on social media to support Democrat candidates like Vice President Kamala Harris and Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV).
The network, founded by Democrat strategist Tara McGowan, claims to fight disinformation but has been criticized for spreading biased content disguised as local news. Watchdog group NewsGuard labeled the network a “clandestine political operation” intended to mislead voters. According to former employees, Courier’s strategy is to hook readers with neutral content before pushing pro-Democrat messaging.
One example of The Nevadan’s misleading tactics is an ad falsely claiming that Trump would bring back a military draft. Trump has rejected this rumor, which originally circulated through the Washington Post.
Courier Newsroom’s expansion is part of a larger strategy to influence elections in swing states. Backed by millions in funding from Soros, the network skirts financial disclosure requirements by qualifying as a news outlet under FEC rules. Critics argue the network’s primary purpose is to promote Democrat candidates during critical election cycles.
